Heritage Sports Collectibles Catalog Auction
Heritage Auctions’ Spring catalog auction features nearly 3,000 lots of rare and valuable trading cards and sports collectibles from all eras, sports and subgenres. Notable components include a thrilling array of 1952 Topps Baseball cards including multiple Mantle #311’s and dozens of hallmarked PSA Mint 9 beauties from the personal collection of trading card pioneer Lionel Carter. Mantle will appear multiple times among the top results in this substantial sale, including an SGC NM-MT 8 example of his 1951 Bowman rookie and a PSA Gem Mint 10 issued by Topps during the Mick’s final professional campaign of 1968. He’ll share space on the leaderboard with fellow Yankees icons Babe Ruth and his 1916 M101-5 and a spectacular signed 1925 Exhibits rookie from Lou Gehrig.
As autographed trading cards further assert themselves as prime targets among cultured collectors, Heritage will service that market with signed examples of 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson, 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente rookie and the iconic trio of Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Julius Erving as assembled by the 1980 Topps Basketball team. And just about every Topps card from Mickey Mantle appears in signed format as well, certainly the most comprehensive offering ever presented in a single auction event.
Notable within that subgenre is The Pelé Collection, a memorial tribute to the greatest figure in global sports whose passing in the last days of 2022 was mourned in hundreds of countries. The collection represents an assembly of trading cards and other collectibles retained by the Brazilian superstar, with each item personally autographed at one of his very last signings. Most of the collection is pedigreed as “The Pelé Collection” by PSA/DNA and will be accompanied by video of Pelé signing the item.
The greatest hitter that ever lived is expected to dominate the memorabilia portion of this special auction, with his personal 1957 Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Crown likely to bring a regal sum at the close of bidding. Williams’ 1966 Hall of Fame induction ring, complete with its original packaging, ranks among the most important pieces to enter the hobby from the hallowed halls of Cooperstown. One of the best game used Williams bats not on display in that museum will find a new owner, a heavily-used Hillerich & Bradsby from the American League MVP and pennant-winning season of 1946.
Every game used collector understands that photo match authentication is the purest provenance possible, and this auction is awash with ironclad proof for such historic material as the sneakers worn in LeBron James’ second NBA game, the Pittsburgh Steelers jersey Dwight White wears on his 1973 Topps rookie card, a 2007 Packers jersey from a three-touchdown Brett Favre performance, and the glove worn by Mookie Betts as he earned the American League MVP and a World Championship for the 2018 Boston Red Sox.
The auction is now open for bidding at www.HA.com/50062 and will close in Extended Bidding format between Thursday May 11 and Saturday May 13. Make sure to get your qualifying bids in early while prices are still very low in order to assure the widest possible range of options as each session enters Extended Bidding at 10 PM Central time.
