Hake’s Rolls Out Cuban Cards, Negro League Artifacts
Hake’s is in the midst of its 206th auction, which closes July 17-19, that includes more baseball items from the Richard Merkin Collection. In the last Hake’s auction, the 1910 Punch Cigarros “Pop” Lloyd baseball card from this collection sold for a record price of $94,875.
This auction has more Cuban baseball cards, designated by SGC with “The Richard Merkin” pedigree. Some of these include: 1910 Punch Sam Crawford, Joe Casey, George Moriarty, Bris Lord, Ricardo Hernadez, Quico Marinat, Emilio Palomino and Carlos Roggers; 1923-24 Billiken John Henry Lloyd, Oliver Marcelle, Clint Thomas, Frank Warfield and Nip Winters; 1923-24 Tomas Gutierrez Oscar Charleston, Andy Cooper, Frank Duncan, Mack Eggleston; 1924-25 Aguiltas Jose Mendez, Dobie Moore and Eustaguio Pedroso. Hake’s is also offering a 1931 Doble Aquila No. 191 Concordia vs. York card featuring Martin Dihigo.
Autographed items include a Ty Cobb signed check display; Babe Ruth signed check; Cy Young signed photo additionally signed by 11 Cy Young Award winners; ball signed by 23 New York Yankees including Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson and Whitey Ford; and a great selection of signed items featuring other Hall Of Fame members such as Dizzy Dean, Joe DiMaggio, Casey Stengel, Duke Snider, Don Drysdale, Johnny Mize, Brooks Robinson, Monte Irvin, Roger Maris and an impressive team-signed photo of the 1969 World Champion New York Mets.
Other stand-out items include a 1915 Breakers Hotel Black baseball team photo featuring National Baseball HOF members John Henry “Pop” Lloyd, Louis Santop, Joe “Smokey” Williams and Pete Hill; an Indianapolis ABC’s Negro League team photo with Oscar Charleston; a 1925 St. Louis Stars Negro League team real photo postcard with Willie Wells; a 1934 Pittsburgh Crawfords team photo with Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige and Oscar Charleston; a 1937 Ciudad Trujillo team photo with Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige; a 1940 Union Laguna Mexican League team real photo postcard with Cool Papa Bell and Hilton Smith; Roy Campanella Baltimore Elite Giants news service photo; a 1954 Roberto Clemente Santurce Crabbers early and news service photo; and Olson’s Cherokee Indian Baseball Club with Maud Nelson rare framed poster.
