What’s in a name? Quite a bit, apparently, and if you have one that neatly and concisely describes the product you are promoting, it would be wise to stick to it. Under such a mandate does veteran auctioneer Bill Goodwin launch his Masterpieces & Uncommon Commons XXII Auction, which opens June 26 and closes on July 16.

With an uncanny knack for securing turn-of-the-century, early candy and gum and postwar Topps and Bowman treasures, Goodwin unveils yet another sale highlighted by coveted pasteboards in often breathtaking condition.

Elbowing for top honors would be a group of six N28 Allen & Ginter Hall of Famers in PSA 8 holders, individual lots comprising of a complete set of T201 Mecca Double Folders, the T205 Hoblitzell “No Stats” rarity graded SGC 5 and a stunning array of M116 Sporting Life and M101 Sporting News cards in PSA 8 and PSA 9 holders.

Ty Cobb elbows for the top spot on the marquee as well as anybody ever has, this time with cool stuff like a T206 Cobb with the Cobb advertising back, a rare Curtis Ireland Cobb card and a number of others of the legendary HOFer, including E102, E95, E98 and E94.

Cobb’s archrival from the 1920s, Babe Ruth, always bats cleanup or thereabouts in a Goodwin sale, and this time that means a rare 1915 postcard, E220 and a 1933 Goudey. Walter Johnson, so elegantly portrayed on the cover of this magazine, winds up there by virtue of knockouts like a 1915 Cracker Jack and T213 Coupon Cigarette Type 3, both in PSA 8 holders, as well as a 1915 M101-5 Sporting News in PSA 9.

As always, the postwar lineup can hold its own with any era, this time with rookie cards of Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Roberto Clemente and Nolan Ryan, all graded PSA 8 or 9, to name a few, plus a 1952 Topps Mantle in an SGC 84 holder.
