Card shop owner shoots and kills armed robber

The owner of a Chicago-area sports collectibles store shot and killed a man who attempted an armed robbery of his business Nov. 3.

Glen Soustek, owner of Westlake Cards, Comics and Coins and in Roselle, Ill., received a gunshot wound in the arm in the robbery attempt. Police in DuPage County said no charges would be filed against Soustek, ruling the shooting was a case of self defense.

According to police, a man entered Soustek's store around 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 3, walked to a counter in the back of the store and pulled a handgun. He then jumped over the counter and pointed the gun at Soustek, who was at his desk behind the counter. Soustek pulled his own gun from the desk and both men fired shots. The robber, 40-year-old Geoffrey A. Webb of St. Louis, was shot several times, including a wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Webb was a convicted felon who had been out on parole after serving time for a 1994 armed robbery.

Soustek, bleeding from his wound to the arm, ran to a neighboring business in the shopping center where his store is located and called for help. He was treated and released from a local hospital. Local authorities said the incident had been captured on a store surveillance camera and they were able to determine that Soustek acted in self defense.
