Badges, Books and a Bonanza of Cards
The Golf Auction’s spring offering will include more than 1,000 lots of fresh memorabilia to the hobby. The auction, which is based around the Masters golf tournament, will open April 1 and close in sessions ending April 11 and April 14 at www.thegolfauction.com.
The Golf Auction has become a mecca for early Masters badge collectors. The spring sale will include the most coveted of the bunch, a 1934 example.
Leading off the sale are individual Masters badges from most of the early years of the fabled tournament, including a newly found Near Mint example of the “Holy Grail” – a 1934 Sunday Masters badge.
The auction’s Masters theme continues with a consignor’s rare 1936 badge, which was submitted with the first known example of the 1936 pairings sheet/program to surface in the hobby. These are must-have items for any serious Masters collector.
For the golf book collector, this auction will be a bonanza, with 400 books offered, including the super rare limited-edition version of Bobby Jones' Down the Fairway, signed and numbered by Jones and author O.B. Keeler, No. 184/300. Also of interest to the book collector will be the first offering of personal correspondence with publisher, notes and photos from the author of The Walter Hagen Story, Margaret Heck. This grouping offers new “Haig” photos to the hobby, along with some stories which were too “hot” to publish at the time.
Golf club collectors will be delighted by this auction with some nice hickory clubs, including baffing spoons, putters and long noses coming from the estate of a long-time California Golf Collectors Society member.
The golf card offerings are loaded this spring, highlighted by the breakup of more than
1936 Masters badge. This will be joined by a 1936 program/pairings sheet that has never come to auction.
200 cases of 2001 Upper Deck Golf cards. This grouping will be completely auctioned, including a Tiger Woods Sign of the Times (9.5), many lots of the various set insert cards and one huge lot of 150,000 cards.
The auction will be capped off with an offering from the personal collection of PGA champion Chick Herbert. His award plaque presented to him as the 1954 PGA champ will be one of the big draws. This is the only known PGA champs plaque to be offered publicly at auction.
In addition to all the first-time offered collectibles, the auction will also include its normal assortment of autograph items authenticated by JSA, including flags, books, photos and balls.
