E-commerce fueling growth of Ironclad Authentics
Ray Schulte’s first goal when he and baseball great Cal Ripken Jr. formed Ironclad Authentics was the management and handling of Ripken’s autograph and memorabilia deals. A year later, Ironclad Authentics has grown significantly and has several more initiatives on its plate for 2006 and beyond.

Among the company’s accomplishments in the past year: Becoming a licensee of the MLB Authentication Program; creation of a “Legends” line of licensed, autographed collages featuring Ripken paired with Brett Favre, Lance Armstrong and Hank Aaron, with many of the pieces nearly sold out; created and marketed a line of memorabilia that celebrated the 10-year anniversary of Ripken breaking Lou Gehrig’s consecutive games played streak; signings with current and past athletes that include Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Stan Musial and Tom Seaver; and growing the sales of Ironclad Authentics through online partnerships with MLB.com, Amazon.com and Shop.com, among others.

“We’re expanding our platforms and really getting our tentacles out there,” said Schulte, general manager for Ironclad Authentics. “From the beginning, our goal was to create a niche by offering items that weren’t available in the marketplace. And we’re getting responses not only from hobbyists, but also from people who are not collectors but simply see that our products are unique and they want to purchase them.”

Having the name and reputation of Ripken behind the company’s efforts has been a key to its success, Schulte said. “With his credibility and his contacts, when we do approach a player about a potential project, we are received with open arms,” he said. “And Cal’s reputation is important in how we do business. We want to be sure the consumer receives a high-quality, authentic item in a timely manner.”

Charitable efforts are also a big part of the company’s efforts, such as next month’s fund-raiser in Puerto Rico for the Roberto Clemente Sports City project and an auction earlier this year of Orioles’ game-worn jerseys featuring commemorative “2,131” patches that raised money for the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation and Orioles charities.

Next year, plans are in place to expand the company’s roster of athletes and its line of special commemorative items, which will grow even more in 2007 in anticipation of Ripken’s induction into Cooperstown. Schulte said the chance to manage and grow a company, particularly through e-commerce offerings, is very satisfying. “E-commerce really intrigues me, and when you have someone with the caliber of Cal, that sets you apart from others because so many people know him and trust him,” Schulte said. “That kind of trust is the key to being successful online. We’ve been in existence for one year and reached heights that we didn’t know we could. And now we see so much potential in the future.”

PSA will authenticate, grade unopened packs in ’06
Professional Sports Authenticator will begin authenticating and grading unopened packs of sports and non-sports trading cards in 2006. A starting date for the new service or information regarding fees have not been announced.

“When the new service begins next year we will accept both vintage and modern packs for certification,” said PSA president Joe Orlando. “Many collectors and dealers have repeatedly said they want the PSA brand for the assurance of authenticity and grade of the unopened packs they buy and sell.”

Orlando said pack specialist Steve Hart, owner of Baseball Card Exchange of Lynwood, Ill., will be working with PSA on the authentication of submitted material. An Unopened Pack Set Registry and price guide will be established after the service begins. “We now are designing a special holder to encapsulate certified packs, and we will publish PSA grading standards for unopened packs,” said Orlando.

Heritage Sports Collectibles' October Signature Auction Realizes Over $1.8 Million and Breaks Records on the Way!
Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers (HG&A) held its most recent Sports Collectibles Signature Auction October 29, in Dallas, Texas. 1,915 total bidders competed for 788 lots, 266 of them successfully, for an overall total of $1,861,300, although after-auction sales are still ongoing and could push the total even higher.

"The biggest star of the sale was the 1911 Addie Joss Day Panoramic Photograph from the Frank "Home Run" Baker Collection (http://www.heritagesportscollectibles.com/common/prlink.php?Sale_No=703&Lot_No=19707&type=prte-pr103105a )," noted Heritage Sports Collectibles director Chris Ivy. "We believe that the price realized of $89,625 is the highest ever achieved for an unsigned sports photograph. The presale estimate for the piece was $10,000 to $15,000, though clearly the fabulous condition and rock-solid provenance accounted for the historic final price."

Another highlight from the auction's phenomenal photography offerings was the Circa 1910 Frank Baker Studio Photograph by Carl Horner (http://www.heritagesportscollectibles.com/common/prlink.php?Sale_No=703&Lot_No=19698&type=prte-pr103105a ), which provided the image from Baker's M116 tobacco card. Fierce bidding more than tripled the presale high estimate to achieve a final tally of $13,145.

"Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel also provided a lot of fireworks on Saturday evening," noted Ivy, who explained that the price of $22,705 realized for his magnificent 1913 World's Series Newsreel Poster (http://www.heritagesportscollectibles.com/common/prlink.php?Sale_No=703&Lot_No=19604&type=prte-pr103105a ) ranks in the top five for sports related posters. "In total, the contents of Stengel's personal collection surpassed the $150,000 mark."

CUSTER LETTER DECRYING REBELS IS TOP ITEM IN 3-DAY AUCTION BY GEPPI’S MEMORABILIA ROAD SHOW - $87,750
A three-day, 1,000-lot online auction conducted by Geppi’s Memorabilia Road Show, found a historic letter written by 24-year old George Armstrong Custer, to be the highest priced item, bringing $87,750 in spirited international bidding. (All prices include the buyer’s premium).

Custer, long before his “Little Big Horn” fame, wrote a four page document in 1864, pledging loyalty to President Lincoln, and claiming to fight on and “hang every human being who possesses a drop of rebel blood in their veins whether they be men, women or children.”

The letter came from the sports-historical-entertainment collection of Bert Padell, the “Financial Advisor to the Stars,” a former Yankee batboy who went on to represent such figures as Joe DiMaggio, Robert DeNiro, Madonna and Britney Spears, and he amassed a collection believed to be the biggest set at auction since Barry Halper in 1999.

From his collection also came a winning bid of $81,900 for a 1950 World Series bat used by Joe DiMaggio, personally handed to Padell, his batboy, following that series.

The other major collection in the auction was the Stanley Weston/Toby Weston Cone boxing collection, which at one time comprised a large segment of the Madison Square Garden Boxing Hall of Fame, and has continued to be updated. Among the most watched items from that collection was a 1916 “confession” letter from Jack Johnson, claiming to have thrown his earlier fight in Havana against Jess Willard. The letter, long coveted by ring historians, went for $26,325. Stanley Weston was a long time boxing and wrestling magazine publisher, artist, writer and boxing historian.

"Our Icons auction was an amazing experience. Toby Weston Cone, Bert Padell, and our other consignors offered a spectacular selection of collectibles with an impeccable combination of provenance and pop culture appeal, and our bidders responded accordingly," said Steve Geppi, President and CEO of Geppi's Memorabilia Road Show. "Even as items are being shipped out to the winning participants, our team is already at work on the next auction. We've set a high standard for ourselves with this event and we look forward to living up to it in the future."

Other highlights in the auction included Lou Gehrig’s 1935 signed Yankee contract ($42,120), Babe Ruth’s 1948 autobiography book contract ($18,720), and his contract for the Babe Ruth Story movie, ($17,750); an original Ebbets Field turnstile ($26,325), a Gaultier-designed bustier worn by Madonna on her “Blonde Ambition” tour ($28,080), and a check written by Christy Mathewson to his namesake son ($24,750).

Lot 303, a trio of Babe Ruth photographs which included the seldom seen cover photo from the catalog, went for $9,360.

Highlights of the third and final day of bidding included:

A full run of All-Star game issued workout jerseys for the 2005 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, auctioned individually, brought some $33,000, raised for the Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T.). The top price for any player was $1,755 for Mariano Rivera’s jersey.

Vintage Authentics features 1972 Dolphins Super Bowl Ring in Nov. 17 auction
Miami Dolphins 1972 "extra" rings have on occassion surfaced through the past few decades but none until now have ever been offered which were originally issued to players, ownership, or principle front office personnel. This gem, representing the greatest season ever recorded by an NFL team, comes from the estate of super scout Mike Rathet. Mike was a lead scout for Vince Lombardi prior to moving on to the Dolphins to work for another Hall of Fame coach in Don Shula. Rathet was a "behind the scenes" type of guy who was never one to flaunt his football prowess and success and therefore rarely ever wore the ring. For this reason, it remains in near flawless, immaculate condition.

The top of the ring leaves little to the imagination in terms of what the ring represents. A beautiful one karat diamond signifying the 17th victory on January 14, 1973 in Super Bowl VII is encircled by 16 diamond chips representing the other 16 wins of their unparalleled perfect season. "Rathet" appears on one side with the official Dolphins logo and "Winning Edge" mantra below. The opposite side has "Super Bowl VII", "Dolphins 14 Redskins 7", "17-0", and "Perfect Season" all beautifully raised above the gold surface surrounding a perfectly intricate carved image of the Super Bowl Trophy.

According to sources within the Miami Dolphins organization, there were only 52 of the high quality 1 karat diamond championship rings produced for players, coaches and other key contributors deemed worthy by Dolphins management. There were a handful of others within the organization that had the option to buy a cheaper version for themselves but it’s estimated that only 5-10 chose to do so. This is only the 3rd genuine Dolphins Super Bowl Ring from the perfect season to hit be offered to hobbyists. There was Dolphin’s punter Billy Loftridge’s Super Bowl Ring that was auctioned in the late 1990’s for $35,000 as well as that of running back Mercury Morris that was sold for an undisclosed amount during the same era. Super scout Mike Rathet had as much to do with the success of the Dolphins as anyone associated with the team which is why he was hand picked to receive this treasure. This is the first to surface in nearly a decade and has many Dolphin’s followers eager to own this piece of football immortality.

Ruth ball sells for $150,000
An autographed Babe Ruth baseball has reportedly sold in a private transaction for $150,000, establishing a record price for a Ruth-signed ball. The sale of the ball, whose autograph graded 9.5 out of 10 by PSA, was brokered by Memory Lane of Tustin, Calif. PSA president Joe Orlando said this particular ball is widely regarded by most hobby experts to be the finest single-signature Ruth ball known. “The eye appeal is extraordinary, with Ruth’s big, bold signature astonishingly vivid in blue ink,” Orlando said.

“The overall grade for the signature and the condition of the ball is 9.5, and that’s still the highest PSA grade to date for a Ruth-signed baseball.” Orlando said the same baseball first set a record in November 2004 when it was purchased for $115,000.

Gutierrez Auctions adds December auction
Mike Gutierrez Auctions typically conducts two auctions per year, so following his September event, he was planning on running his next auction in March, 2006. That changed when a significant baseball collection acquired by a clubhouse worker from the 1960s through the 1980s was brought to his attention, so Gutierrez has added a new auction to be concluded Dec. 15 at his www.mgauction.net Web site.

“The quality of my last auction catalog prompted a consignor to call and offer me his ball collection from a retired clubhouse worker from Milwaukee,” Gutierrez said. “I was thinking I was going to do something in March, and then he called and I thought, ‘Why not run another one?’ ” That collection could comprise 400 lots alone. “It’s mainly balls from the 1970s and ’80s, but there are All-Star team balls, Ripken, McGwire, it’s really good names from that time,” Gutierrez said. “The nice thing about it is I like good provenance. This is fresh material, offered for the first time. We’ll try to put together a provenance cert on these items.”

With consignments from others taken through Oct. 28, Gutierrez hopes to put together a 700-800-lot auction. It should be live on the Web site in mid-November. “The consignment window is small, but we had the basis for an auction, so we’ll make the best of it,” Gutierrez said. “I think it’s going to turn into a nice auction.”

Huggins & Scott auction gets $16,100 for Redskins doll
If you’ve ever wondered what the Honus Wagner of the sports figures niche would be, you can put your mind to rest because a recent Huggins & Scott auction produced the answer. A 15-inch Washington Redskins promo doll from 1961 which is the only known nodder of its kind, fetched a record $16,100 in the recent auction that closed Sept. 30. Add in a record-setting Abraham Lincoln signed presidential commission that garnered $10,350 and one can see how the auction helped the company reach its highest total to date. The auction, which can be accessed at www.oldjudge.com, is titled “The Sarah Rose” collection in honor of owner Lew Lipset’s new grandaughter. The sale, which will feature a variety of 19th Century cards, an 1888 Chicago National League Baseball Club yearbook and a very rare Western Playground Tom Madden card among others, will also be the companies first to feature live online bidding. The entire auction will be live on the site beginning Oct. 7.

Auction highlights for Grey Flannel’s Yankee Stadium Live Auction held in conjunction with with Yankee-Steiner Collectibles is sc heduled for Dec. 8-9 at Yankee Stadium: Yankee Stadium organ, seats from the stadium, 2005 spring training uniforms, complete run of 2005 Yankees players uniforms featuring the Hurricane Katrina patches, which has a beginning bid of $100,000 – all proceeds benefit charity. Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio game-used jerseys, and equipment from past and present Yankees.

Steiner charity auction ends Oct. 28
Steiner Sports: The Collectibles For A Cause Auction, which is currently live on the Steiner Sports Web site at www.steinersports.com, continues through Oct. 28. Steiner will donate 100 percent of each winning bid to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Efforts. Among the headlining items in the auction are an autographed Bob Sheppard (Yankee Stadium announcer) 8-by-10 photograph (ends Oct. 26), Derek Jeter autographed 16-by-20 photo (ends Oct. 28) and Robinson Cano signed baseball (ends Oct. 26).
