Rare Wayne Gretzky Type 1 photo, Mike Tyson image set records in Goldin auction
Three Type 1 original photos set records in Goldin’s Elite Legends Auction, including a rare 1979-80 Wayne Gretzky photo.
The Gretzky photo, which shows “The Great One” on the ice in his rookie season for the Edmonton Oilers, sold for $43,920 —nearly four times the last Gretzky Type I rookie, which sold for $11,400 in September.
The October Elite Legends Auction also included a rare Type 1 photo of Serena and Venus Williams playing chess at their Compton, Calif. home at ages 8 and 10. The original photo of the two future tennis stars sold for a record $10,370.
The third record features the only known Mike Tyson amateur Type I original photo, which captured him at the 1981 Junior Olympics four years prior to the start of his professional career. The photo, which shows a 15-year-old Tyson wearing his gold medal, sold for $20,740.
Other Type 1 photos from the auction included:
• A 1986-87 Michael Jordan Signed Type 1 photo of the Chicago Bull star making an appearance at a Charlotte sporting goods store during his third NBA season in 1986-87. One of only two versions of the photo that exists, it sold for $19,200.
• A 1984 Michael Jordan UNC Signed Type 1 photo shot during the presentation of his prestigious Eastman Award for College Basketball Player of the Year. The earliest known Jordan-signed Type 1 ever to hit the market, it sold for $7,930.
