Michael Jordan memorabilia, rookie card set records in SCP auction
Michael Jordan once again reigned supreme in a sports collectibles auction, setting more records in the 2024 Fall Premier Auction at SCP Auctions.
Jordan topped the auction with two big sales—one for a rare piece of memorabilia, and another for one of his most iconic trading cards.
Jordan’s game-worn shorts from the “Last Dance” 1998 NBA Finals sold for $216,000, a record for game-worn basketball shorts. The shorts were photo-matched to three home games during the 1998 Finals.
Jordan’s 1984 Star #101 rookie card also set a record, selling for $312,000. The sale was a record for the grade (BGS 8.5, Beckett 9 Auto) and more than $100,000 more than the last sale.
The auction also featured strong results for game-used bats, including $204,000 for the bat Willie Mays used to hit his 660th and final home run of his career. A 1951 Ted Williams bat, graded PSA/DNA GU 10, brought $96,000, while a 1967-68 Mays bat graded PSA/DNA GU 10 sold for $90,000.
Among high-end vintage cards, a 1933 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth card (PSA 8) sold for $216,000, while a 1935 Pebble Beach Clothiers postcards near set went for $51,000, and a 1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain In Action rookie signed and inscribed on the back of the card sold for $31,200.
Other game-worn memorabilia included a 2019 LeBron James game-worn jersey photo-matched to a triple-double performance brought $60,000, while another James gamer from opening night and the Lakers’ ring ceremony in December 2020 went for $48,000. A 2021 Stephen Curry game-worn jersey went for $28,800, while a pair of 2022 Luka Doncic jerseys photo-matched to a 40-point triple-double sold for $26,400.
