Hank Aaron, Derek Jeter rookie cards top $15.4 million REA auction

From Hank Aaron and Derek Jeter rookie cards to a pair of Nike sneakers from Michael Jordan’s rookie season, the Spring Catalog Auction at Robert Edward Auctions totaled $15.4 million in sales.

Two weeks after baseball celebrated the 50th anniversary of Hank Aaron’s record 715th career home run, Aaron’s trading cards are still selling for top dollar.

A 1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron Rookie PSA 9 sold for $420,000 Sunday to top the Spring Catalog Auction at Robert Edward Auctions, which generated more than $15.4 million in sales on 91,200 bids with 16 items topping six figures.

A 1971 Topps #400 Hank Aaron PSA GEM MINT 10 (1 of 4) also topped six figures, selling for $210,000, arecord for the card.

Other highlights included:

• A 1969-1970 Topps Basketball high-grade complete set ranked No. 4 on the PSA Set Registry (8.77 GPA) that sold for $336,000.

• A 1993 Upper Deck SP Foil #279 Derek Jeter Rookie card, one of only 21 examples graded PSA 10, for $312,000.

• A pair of Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls signed game-worn Nike Air Ship sneakers worn during Jordan’s historic 1984 rookie season for $282,000.

“What I loved about this event, aside from all of the tremendous results, was the amplified engagement and traction across so many different areas of the hobby,” REA President Brian Dwyer said. “From vintage to modern cards to game-used memorabilia, original photography and unopened boxes, our Spring Auction was a microcosm of the overall health of our industry.”

Set builders were active during the auction. In addition to the 1969-1970 Topps Basketball complete set, the auction featured other high-grade sets, including: a 1969 Topps high-grade complete set ranked No. 6 on the PSA Set Registry (8.98 GPA) that sold for $216,000; a 1962 Topps PSA-graded complete set with 32 variations for $108,000; and a high-grade 1956 Topps complete set that included an SGC NM/MT 8 Mickey Mantle for $75,000.
