1933 Goudey set could command more than $1 million

Scoffing at the Great Depression that held the nation in its merciless grip, the Goudey Gum company produced the first great trading card issue of the long-standing Bubble Gum Era in 1933, a set that holds sway as one of the hobby’s “Big Three.”

One of the finest assemblies of that beloved 240-card masterpiece, is now open for bidding at in an auction hosted by Heritage Auctions. The set is ranked No. 3 in PSA’s Set Registry. The set is being broken up with individual cards being sold in the auction.

“Our consignor cut no corners in piecing together this set,” said Chris Ivy, director of Sports Auctions at Heritage. “The 8.672 set rating is a staggeringly high figure for this issue. And even the ultra-rare Napoleon Lajoie card is present.”

This auction is now open for bidding and will close via Extended Bidding format at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21.
