Yankees 1927 team-signed photo sells for $77,000 i
The 1927 New York Yankees original photo signed by the entire team was clearly the highlight in American Memorabilia's recent Holiday Gift Auction. The auction included nearly 1,400 lots and more than 10,000 bids.
The Yankees team signed photo was one of the more unique items to hit the auction circuit. Not only did it have the big names like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, but it had nearly impossible to find autographs from guys like Eddie Bennett, the handicapped team batboy/mascot, Charlie O'Leary, Art Fletcher, Johnny Grabowski and Urban Shocker. The photo was graded PSA 8 and sold for slightly over $77,000 with the 17.5-percent kicker.
Several Pittsburgh Steelers items also got plenty of attention from bidders. A 1977 Terry Bradshaw game-worn road jersey with four team repairs and letters from Lou Lampson and Denny Esken solf for $35,933., while a Joe Greene game-worn, signed helmet sold for $14,722.
Another Ruth item, a signed 1931 D&M bat sold for $15,238, while his personal cashmere hat brought in $7,120.
Other top baseball items included: an early 1960s Sandy Koufax game-worn Dodgers satin jacket ($20,317); 1938 Goudey Joe DiMaggio No. 274 PSA 8 ($8,915); 1975 Johnny Bench game-worn catcher's mitt ($6,705); 1953 Topps signed Mickey Mantle with the autograph graded PSA/DNA 10 ($6,473); a 1996 Yankees World Championship pendant from Jim Leyritz's ex-wife ($6,088); a rookie-era Roger Clemens Boston Red Sox road jersey ($5,795); Albert Pujols 2001 rookie Cardinals jersey with No. 68 ($5,349); and a Roberto Clemente signed ONL (Giles) ball inscribed "To Chuck best wishes" ($5,037).
There were several entertainment items that were among the top 20 items sold, led by Elvis Presley's personal "Hollywood Walk of Fame" Award from 1960. The award was sourced directly from Presley's Palm Springs estate and sold for $23,923.
Also, a John Lennon hand-made, signed, dated and inscribed Christmas card, with the signature graded PSA/DNA 10 sold for $7,184.
Other top items from the auction included: 1988-89 Wayne Gretzky game-worn, signed All-Star jersey with original NHL authenticity ($16,195); a very scarce Bobby Hull signed vintage golf ball inscribed "With best wishes, sincerely" ($13,053); a 1990 Magic Johnson game-worn Lakers jersey ($8,616); a 1977-78 Bobby Hull game-worn Winnipeg Jets jersey with heavy use ($7,832); 2003-04 LeBron James game-worn rookie Cavaliers jersey ($7,012); and a 1978 original Andy Warhol cibachrome of Muhammad Ali, which had never been seen or published before and is a museum quality print ($6,777).
