500 home run club member bats highlight Mile High Card Company sale
Mile High Card Company’s March Auction offers the most comprehensive selection of material in the company’s history, headlined by a selection of game-used bats from each member of the legendary 500 home run club. Other highlights include: an 1888 N173 Old Judge King Kelly “Street Clothes” variation cabinet card that is one of only four known to exist; a 1933 V353 World Wide Gum (Canadian Goudey) uncut sheet featuring three Babe Ruth Cards and Lou Gehrig; a selection of high-grade vintage cards and original type I photos; and Roberto Clemente’s 1972 All-Star ring, the last award he received before his passing.
“This auction is loaded,” said MHCC President and CEO Brian Drent. “Whether it’s sports cards or vintage memorabilia, Mile High continues to make each auction bigger and better than the last.”
The auctioning of game-used bats from every member of the 500 home run club will be an event that collectors haven’t seen in recent memory. Key game-used bats include: 1921-31 Babe Ruth Louisville Slugger Professional Model MEARS A6, 1926-27 Jimmie Foxx Spalding Rookie-Era PSA/DNA GU 9, 1939-40 Ted Williams Rookie-Era Louisville Slugger PSA/DNA GU 9, 1943 Mel Ott Louisville Slugger PSA/DNA GU 8, 1950-1960 Frank Robinson Rookie-Era Signed Louisville Slugger PSA/DNA GU 8.5, 1950s Harmon Killebrew Louisville Slugger PSA/DNA GU 8.5, 1959-60 Eddie Mathews Adirondack PSA/DNA GU 10, 1960 Willie Mays Signed Louisville Slugger that was used to hit career home run #272 with home run notation added to barrel PSA/DNA GU 9, and 1965-68 Mickey Mantle Louisville Slugger PSA/DNA GU.
Sports cards aren’t forgotten, as a selection of top-quality sports cards are also included in the auction. The King Kelly cabinet card is joined by a 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle SGC 7, 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folder Matthewson/Bridwell (Mathewson) PSA 8.5, 1912 T202 Hassan Cigarettes #129 Ty Cobb Steals Third SGC 86, 1915 E106 American Caramel Honus Wagner Batting PSA 5, 1919 T213 Coupon Cigarettes Type 3 Christy Mathewson PSA 8, 1922 W575-2/1924 Knight Motors Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb Uncut Panel, 1930 Baguer Chocolate Babe Ruth PSA 7, 1933 Goudey #149 Babe Ruth SGC 7, 1934 Goudey #61 Lou Gehrig SGC 88, 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle PSA 6.5, and 1952 Bowman #101 Mickey Mantle.
Also of note are five cards from the scarce 1961 Topps Dice Game test series, newly discovered and each the only example known: Bill White SGC 5, Norm Siebern SGC 4, Jim Davenport SGC 2, Dick Groat SGC 2 and Bill Mazeroski SGC 2.
Top-notch sets and near sets are prominently featured as well, with a 1909-11 T206 near complete set (477/520) all PSA graded #8 on PSA Set Registry, 1911 T205 Gold Border partial set (138/206) all PSA graded, 1915 Cracker Jack near complete set 110/176 completely PSA graded, 1962 Kahn’s Weiners complete set #1 on PSA Set Registry with 9.085 GPA, 1951 Parkhurst exceptionally high grade near complete set (96/105) with many PSA graded, 1956 Topps Elvis Presley complete set #2 on PSA Set Registry with 9.076 overall GPA and 1957 Topps Hit Stars complete set #3 on PSA Set Registry.
A 1966 Topps Baseball Near-Complete Master Set (587/612) #8 on PSA Set Registry will also be available and offered complete as well as in individual lots.
Rare items included in the auction are a 1933 V353 World Wide Gum (Canadian Goudey) uncut color-process proof sheets series of eight featuring Bengough and seven HOFers with Jimmie Foxx, a high-grade Babe Ruth single-signed “Two-Star” 1943 OAL (Harridge) baseball PSA/DNA and JSA, a 1963 The Beatles signed Parlophone Records promotional postcard with all four members, and a selection of vintage and one-of-a-kind original Type I photographs including 1916 Chicago American Giants PSA/DNA panoramic photo featuring Rube Foster, “Pop” Lloyd and Pete Hill, 1921-22 Santa Clara Leopards PSA/DNA Type I original photograph featuring Oscar Charleston and Alejandro Oms, circa 1928 Negro League realphoto postcard featuring Martin Dihigo and Jud Wilson, 1921 Babe Ruth PSA/DNA Type I Original Photograph by Paul Thompson, 1921 Babe Ruth PSA/DNA Original Type I Photo by Underwood & Underwood, and a 1918 Fort Porter Baseball Team panoramic photograph featuring Shoeless Joe Jackson and Lefty Williams.
