From the earliest days of organized sports in the United States, trading cards highlighted athletes that symbolized more than just competition—they could feature pride, unity and shared values.

As America celebrates its 250th birthday, many trading cards featuring patriotic symbolism—in some cases red, white and blue backgrounds—have become small symbols of this country. At the same time, individual athletes have also embodied patriotic spirit through their presence on trading cards.

Whether representing the Stars and Stripes at a World Cup or Olympics, these athletes—and their cards—can also be totems that celebrate America. Through bold graphics and patriotic motifs, these cards reinforce the connection between athletic excellence and national pride.

Over the years, patriotic-themed cards have evolved, but their core purpose remains the same: Capture moments when athletic achievement and national identity come together in a lasting image.

For collectors, these cards are more than keepsakes. In showcasing athletes at the height of their achievements, they also reflect the eras in which they were produced, wartime resolve and global competition. Here are 10 trading cards that exemplify this patriotic spirit:

The future major leaguer, who at the time had been a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic baseball team, was included as part of a subset of the 1985 Topps Baseball checklist. Donning a USA cap, red jersey and toothy grin, it remains collectible because many consider it to be McGwire’s rookie card.

The future Hall of Famer’s rookie card takes on a patriotic feel given the 1991 Gulf War. During “Operation Desert Shield,” Topps produced a special parallel set—with a small gold foil “Desert Shield” logo on the front—that were given away to U.S. military personnel overseas.

McGwire makes the list for a second time. In 1991, Fleer featured the Oakland A’s first baseman holding up a bat pressed against the back of his head and standing in front of an American flag. Painted by artist Terry Smith, the image, part of a 12-card subset, was released during the Gulf War. It quickly became a must-have card at the time.

Featuring 10 of the greatest basketball players of all time, this card was part of a Barcelona ’92 set celebrating the first time NBA stars were allowed to participate at the Summer Olympics. The card, highlighted by Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, features a U.S. flag in the background.

This card features the U.S. women’s national soccer team legend during her rise to global prominence. Widely considered her rookie card, it remains highly collectable and features Hamm in her USA uniform.

No patriotic card list would be complete without a mention of hockey star Mike Eruzione, the captain of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” team that defeated Team Russia and went on to win gold at Lake Placid. This Upper Deck card features Eruzione waving a U.S. flag after receiving his medal.

Arguably the best male American soccer player ever, Pulisic is featured on this Panini card celebrating a goal in a U.S. uniform. The short-printed card is highly collectible and has increased in popularity and value as fans anxiously await another World Cup this summer.

This short-printed card celebrates the life Pat Tillman, who left the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the Army after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan, embodying selflessness and patriotism. He was killed in 2004 in Afghanistan as a result of friendly fire. The card, a tribute to Tillman’s love of country, features the flag and bald eagle.  

The Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher, all the rage when he burst onto the scene in 2024, is among the ballplayers who got the Independence Day parallel treatment. Skenes, a member of the U.S. team at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, played for the U.S. Collegiate National Team in 2021 and 2022).

Nothing screams U-S-A! U-S-A! more than Megan Keller and Jack Hughes on this print-on-demand card after each scored the winning overtime goal at the Milan-Cortina Olympics. The twin 2-1 wins against rival Canada gave Team USA the gold medal in both the men’s and women’s hockey tournaments.
