Topps to Resurrect Star Wars Galaxy Brand
Topps took a bit of a gamble in 1993 when it rolled out its Stars Wars Galaxy product. But it was a gamble that paid off handsomely.
“When we first introduced this all-art concept in 1993, it was a relatively quiet time for Star Wars,” said Ira Friedman, Topps VP of publishing. “The original movie trilogy was long gone from theaters and talk of more films was purely speculation. Yet when our Star Wars Galaxy cards hit, the groundbreaking idea took fans on a collecting joyride that spanned three different series, two coffee table books, and encompassed more than 350 spectacular pieces of Star Wars artwork.”
More than 15 years later, Topps has announced plans to offer a fourth series of the Galaxy product. Once again, the product – which will be released in February – will present artist interpretations of the Star Wars Universe.
Among the inserts in the set will be a foil-stamped reprint of a Yoda promo card that was originally designed for the 1993 product. Lucas Films asked the card be pulled from production just prior to its release, but a few samples made it into the hobby. Versions of the original promo have sold for more than $1,000 over the years.
