There are few quarterbacks in NFL history who can come close to matching Tom Brady’s seven Super Bowl victories and record-breaking numbers.

One who comes close is Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Montana, who won four Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers.

But Montana has surpassed Brady in one career milestone—most expensive game-worn football jersey.

The jersey Montana wore in his Super Bowl XXIV victory has been purchased for a record $1.5 million by alternative asset and collectibles company Treasure Trove.

The sale tops the previous record of $1.39 million for Brady’s last NFL game jersey.

Montana wore the jersey in his final Super Bowl appearance in 1990, a 55-10 win over the Denver Broncos. Montana won his third Super Bowl MVP in the game, throwing for 297 yards and five touchdowns.

Montana’s Super Bowl jerseys come with an odd twist. Although he played in four Super Bowls, he has only three game-worn Super Bowl jerseys because his wife accidentally picked his second Super Bowl jersey for the third game, so he wore the same jersey twice in 1985 and 1989.

“Only three Joe Montana Super Bowl jerseys exist, and that kind of scarcity, attached to an athlete with a flawless championship record, is exactly what makes collectibles a serious asset class,” said AJ Scaramucci, CEO and co-founder of Treasure Trove. “What gold is to physical value and bitcoin is to digital, the greatest game-worn memorabilia is to cultural value.”

The jersey Montana wore in the 1985 and ’89 Super Bowls sold for a then-record $1.2 million at Goldin in 2023.

Montana has now produced two of the top three most expensive game-worn football jerseys of all-time. Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers Super Bowl LV jersey is fourth with a sale of $480,000.
