Barry Sanders, Peyton Manning cards set records in historic Heritage auction
Kickoff for the 2026 NFL season is just two weeks away and football collectors are already paying big dollars for iconic gridiron collectibles.
Cards of NFL legends Barry Sanders, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and one American football pioneer attracted plenty of interest and big dollars in the historic $62.9 million Summer Platinum Auction at Heritage Auctions.
Sanders, one of the greatest running backs of all time, set a record when his one-of-one 1998 Metal Universe Barry Sanders Gem Master #20 sold for $512,400, a record for any item associated with the Detroit Lions legend. The card, graded PSA 7—MBA Gold, was issued during Sanders’ final NFL season.

Another one-of-one card, a 1998 SkyBox Metal Universe Peyton Manning Gem Master Rookie #189, sold for $414,800, a record for any Manning collectible. The card, which shows Manning in his University of Tennessee uniform, was graded graded PSA 8.5-MBA Silver.
1930s football legend Bronko Nagurski also had a record-setting card when his 1935 National Chicle Bronko Nagurski #34 (PSA NM 7) went for $402,600, more than doubling the previous record for any other card from the landmark football set.
Tom Brady, the greatest quarterbacks of all time, and Patrick Mahomes, the game's biggest current star, also had big sales.
Mahomes’ 2017 Panini National Treasures Red Laundry Tag Auto card (Authentic, Auto 10) sold for $280,600.
Brady’s 2000 Upper Deck SPx Rookie #130 (BGS 9.5) went for $189,100.
