A Babe Ruth-Lou Gehrig dual-signed baseball, along with single-signed Ruth and Gehrig baseballs, top a list of items in Coach's Corner Sports and Celebrity Auction, which will end March 31. Online and fax bidding is currently open. Overall, there will be more than 3,500 items included in the auction.

The Ruth-Gehrig signed baseball is from the 1920s, features red-and-blue lacing and comes with a Wright & Ditson Victory League label. Both signatures are in black ink and grade an 8, according to GM Lee Trythall. The ball comes with a certificate of authenticity and is conservatively valued at $12,000.

Meanwhile, the single-signed Ruth ball is a Harridge AL ball and is signed on the sweet spot. The Gehrig ball, also a Harridge AL, comes with his signature on a side panel in black fountain pen.

Other Ruth-related items include a 2004 Donruss Ruth-Gehrig bat card, a Ruth-signed 34-inch bat (personalized to "Tony"), a signed Hall-of-Fame plaque, a single-signed Official AL ball personalized to his friend (and noted 1930s sportswriter/agent) Christy Walsh, a signed 1939 First-Day Cover Cooperstown Baseball Centennial cachet, a signed Ruth-Gehrig cut and a signed picture (from a publication) of Ruth showing another player how to pitch.

Other signed baseballs offered in the auction include a Gabby Hartnett signed Wilson baseball, a Rogers Hornsby signed ball that appears to be an official AL ball but with considerable fading on the label, a Rube Foster signed, red-stitched, vintage ball, a Dazzy Vance signed 1930s-era Spalding ball, a Grover Cleveland Alexander signed 1940s vintage ball and a Honus Wagner signed Official NL ball.

Also available are a Jimmie Foxx signed red-laced ball, a Roberto Clemente signed official NL ball, a Jackie Robinson signed Official NL ball from the 1950s, a Boston Bees team-signed 1938 Official NL ball with 26 signatures, a 1938 Yankees World Champions signed ball with 25 signatures from the collection of former player Mel Mazzera and a 500-Home Run Club baseball with the 11 signatures on it.

There will be at least four Ty Cobb items in the auction, including a signed check "cut," a 1961 Fleer Baseball card (which has seen better days, but is one of the few of these that Cobb signed), a signed 8-by-10 photo and a 1940s game-used baseball.

This auction features other cuts, books and signed photos such as a Jackie Robinson signed personal check, a Dodgers Greats photo including five all-time favorite players, a 20-by-24 picture of the 1999 Yankees celebrating their world championship containing 25 signatures, a 1984 USA Baseball team signed display with 23 players on it (McGwire, Will Clark, B. J. Surhoff, etc.), a Bobby Jones signed 3-by-5 card, a Jack Chesbro signed cut, a Thurman Munson signed 8-by-10 Wirephoto, a Tiger Woods signed 8-by-10 photo, a Ted Williams signed piece of art from 1985.

Also a Johnny Evers cut U.S. postcard, a Lloyd Waner signed Perez-Steele postcard, a Hank Greenberg signed 8-by-10 photo, a DiMaggio-Mantle-Williams signed 11-by-14 photo and a Christy Mathewson signed index card.

Signed uniforms, memorabilia and equipment include a Mark McGwire signed Pro Model bat, a 2004 Boston Red Sox limited edition (17/100) Cooperstown Bat with 23 signatures, a pair of Brett Favre autographed cleats and a British Open signed Tiger Woods golf flag.

For card collectors what could be more appealing than a 1968 Topps Mickey Mantle card graded Pristine 10 and there will also be a 1984 Donruss baseball set with 503 different autographs.

From the world of history comes a signed letter (on National Hotel of Washington stationery) from Wilbur Wright advising the correspondent about a future flight.

From the art and entertainment world come two John Lennon items: a signed Plastic Ono Band album and a matted and framed sketch by the Beatle legend. Also a Lynyrd Skynyrd signed "Gimme Back My Bullets" LP, a Grateful Dead "Without a Net" signed album, an Elvis Presley signed "Loving You" album, a signed Three Stooges photo and a Bob Marley signed photo.

Bids will be accepted online at, by phone at 215-721-9162 or by mail prior to the auction date. The complete auctions listings appear in a 17-page advertising section in this week's SCD.
