Mastro's slam-dunk with Celtics jerseys

Editor Input Needed

Boston Celtics fans for decades relied on a Hall of Fame roster of legendary basketball stars, the same group that Mastro Auctions will spotlight in the company's Dec. 6-8 auction of more than 2,600 lots of high-grade cards, memorabilia, comics, Americana and fine art.

Bidding begins on Nov. 20 and concludes on Dec. 8 in an auction that will include the second major installment of comic books and comic art fueled by Mastro Auctions' inaugural comic event in August.

In addition to the collection of game-used Boston Celtics jerseys, the auction also features game-used bats from some of the biggest names in the game, a vast array of pristine cards and sets, important paintings and a number of notable documents related to U.S. presidents.

The lineup of game-worn Celtics jerseys launches with an early 1960s Bill Russell home jersey, which carries a $20,000 mimimum bid. It is flanked by gamers from the likes of Bob Cousy (late 1950s road, $5,000) that is actually from Russell's personal collection, Dave Cowens (mid-1970s road, $2,500), and John Havlicek (mid-1970s home, $2,500). The headliners from the harcourt also include a 1948 Bowman George Mikan rookie in PSA 9 that opens at $5,000, a 1968 Philadelphia 76ers home jersey ($5,000), Mikan's own NBA 50 Greatest Players signed lithograph ($5,000) and George Gervin's 2003 San Antonio Spurs championship ring ($2,500).

Three of the top bats from the sale include: a 1917-24 Ty Cobb gamer ($10,000), a George "Babe" Ruth 1921-31 Hillerich & Bradsby game-used bat ($10,000) and a 1949 Jackie Robinson Hillerich & Bradsby bat ($10,000, shown this page).

The auction also features game-used bats from Lou Gehrig, Honus Wagner (1917-21 H & B sidewritten, $2,500), Mickey Mantle (1961 World Series, $5,000), Ted Williams (1947 Triple Crown season, $5,000), and Mel Ott (1920's Kren's Special, $2,500), along with a 1932 Ruth bat ($10,000).
