An array of sports and entertainment items - topped by Josh Gibson, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Walter Johnson single-signed balls, a hand-signed John F. Kennedy letter and a Beatles signed record album - headline a list of items showcased in Coach's Corner Sports and Celebrity August Auction.
The auction "week" will end on Aug. 18 with on-line and fax bidding currently live at the auction house's website. In all, there will be more than 3,500 items up for grabs.
The Gibson signature is on a "City League" ball and is still in the original box from Belknap, Ky. The signature is on a side panel in black ink. Meanwhile, the Ruth signature is on a Spalding National League ball, sweet-spot signed in black ink. The Gehrig autograph is on a Lane & Campbell ball, side-panel signed and grades at an 8.5, while the Johnson ball is signed "Best Wishes" and is signed on the sweet spot. Condition of this ball is fair.
The JFK letter is on Senate stationary and is from him to Sen. Bobby Baker. It also contains some hand-written notes from Kennedy. The Beatles album has all four signatures inside the cover on their respective photos. This item comes with three separate COAs. A Paul McCartney signed Squire Bullet guitar will also be offered in this auction.
Other interesting and significant signed baseballs offered in this auction include a Mel Ott side-panel signed MacGregor ball, a Roberto Clemente sweet-spot signed Official NL ball, a Hank Greenberg sweet-spot signed Official American League ball, a Honus Wagner signed Harwood official ball, a Derek Jeter signed MLB, a Wilson Regulation League baseball with 28 Hall of Famer signatures (Joe DiMaggio, Gabby Hartnett, Dizzy Dean, Bill Dickey, Frank Baker and others), a Roger Maris signed "61 in 61" baseball and a Gehrig-Ruth signed 1920s vintage Junior League ball.
This auction features some noteworthy cuts, books, pictures and signed photos, including three 8-by-10 photos originating with ScoreBoard and each signed by Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle, also a similar piece signed by Joe DiMaggio and Williams, a Mantle-Maris signed 8-by-10 1961 spring training photo, an Eddie Plank signed small pencil cut, a lot of five Williams-signed ScoreBoard photos and a 1939 A's scorecard front signed by Jimmie Foxx, Ruth and Connie Mack.
Other signed uniforms, memorabilia and equipment pieces include a Ruth-signed Louisville Slugger, a Walter Payton signed NFL football, a Nelson Fox signed H&B bat, an Alex Rodriguez signed Yankees jersey and a Bobby Orr signed Canadian National Team jersey.
Card collectors will find interest in a 1979-80 Topps Wayne Gretzky rookie card graded Gem Mint, a 1980-81 Topps Magic Johnson/Larry Bird rookie card graded Pristine, a lot of 950 signed star and deceased player baseball cards and a complete 50-card set of 1938 boxing cards.
From the art and entertainment world comes a Judy Garland signed 8-by-10, a Laurel and Hardy signed 8-by-10, a Bob Marley signed "Burning" LP, Peter Max artwork from 1974, a Jimi Hendrix signed and custom-matted display, an Elvis Presley signed Kodak photo, a James Dean signed 11-by-14 matted photo, a multi-signature Highwaymen guitar (Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings), a "Wizard of Oz" signed cast photo, a signed "Bewitched" cast photo, a Charles Schulz signed drawing of Linus, a Salvador Dali 12-by-17 framed piece of art, a Beatles signed "second LP," a "M*A*S*H*" cast-signed photo, a Rat Pack signed 8-by-10 color photo with all five signatures, a Rolling Stones actual framed Gold Record, a Tazmanian Devil original piece of Stephen Kauffman art and a Marlon Brando signed "Godfather" 8-by-10.
