Coach's Corner Sports and Celebrity auction launches the first of 13 auctions in 2007 with an assortment of significant sports and celebrity items.
The top two items are both team-signed baseballs from legendary squads - the 1927 Yankees and the Babe Ruth-led 1934 Tour of Japan team. The auction "week" will end on Jan. 5, 2007, with online and fax bidding currently going on at the auction house website. In all, there will be more than 3,500 items for sale.
A 1927 Yankees ball, which is a Reach Official National League baseball with red-and-black laces, showcases Ruth's signature on the sweet spot. The ball is dated Oct. 6, 1927. The signatures also include Lou Gehrig, Urban Shocker, Earle Combs, Bob Shawkey, George Pipgras, Waite Hoyt and 15 others.
The second item is a 1934 Tour of Japan ball that was likely signed at a function after the team returned from the Orient because the ball carries the signature of Louisville Slugger president Bud Hillerich along with Ruth, Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx and a total of 19 players. The ball is an official National League baseball.
Also in the auction is a collection of 40-plus original photos from Herb Pennock's personal collection. Many of the photos contain Pennock's written signature or description on the back.
The third item is a Ruth-Gehrig signed Wellinger & Dunn baseball, with Ruth on the sweet spot and Gehrig on a side panel.
Meanwhile, the fourth item is another famous American duo - Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe. DiMaggio and Monroe signed this unbranded baseball in ink on a side panel.
The fifth item is a copy of the Beatles "Second Album" signed in blue ink by all four and with "Best wishes from the Beatles" also signed in George Harrison's hand.
A signed Ruth Spalding Official League ball, personalized "To My Pal Henry Engel," comes with impeccable provenance, consigned by Henry's grandson - it has been in the family since the day Ruth signed it. The ball is signed on a side panel and the date 1941 also appears. Another Ruth single-signed Official AL ball is also available in this auction.
Other signed baseballs included in the sale are a Cap Anson signed unlabeled ball; a Josh Gibson signed Official Baseball; a Walter Johnson signed Official Spalding National League ball; a Hank Greenberg Official Joe Cronin AL ball; a Foxx-signed MacGregor baseball; a 500 Home Run Club signed baseball autographed by all 11 living (at the time), including Eddie Murray; and a Foxx single-signed American League (Cronin) baseball.
This auction features some noteworthy cuts, books, pictures and signed photos, including an unusual 1927 New York Yankees sheet of signatures measuring approximately 5-by-7 inches. The piece is shellacked, but clean. It is dated March 25-26, 1927, and has all the usual suspects on it, including Ruth, Gehrig, Hoyt, Tony Lazzeri, Miller Huggins, Bob Muesel, Earle Coombs and the rest. Also a 14-by-21 foldout of golfing immortal Bobby Jones from 1930 is available. It is one of only 999 produced.
Meanwhile, the auction also features three DiMaggio-signed Yankee Stadium blueprints, a Jack Chesbro cut signature measuring 5/8-by-2 inches, a Mickey Mantle signed 16-by-20-inch photo, a Pele signed 16-by-20 from a private signing in London, a Sandy Koufax signed Los Angeles Dodgers stats jersey and a Jacob P. Beckley signed cut.
Signed bats, uniforms, memorabilia and other equipment pieces include a Ruth-signed H&B #110 Ruth model bat, a Walter Payton signed NFL football, a Barry Bonds signed Mitchell & Ness replica Pirates jersey, a DiMaggio-signed Mitchell & Ness Yankee 1939 replica jersey and a Ben Hawkins game-used Eagles helmet.
Also a Frank "Home Run" Baker signed D&M Model 50 bat, a Phillip Rivers game-used and signed Chargers jersey, a Roy Campanella signed Brooklyn Dodgers game (acquired in person by the consignor) and a Dennis Martinez game-worn Orioles rookie jersey.
